new spot: Dinette

If you haven’t gone to Dinette yet, then you must go soon. It’s a cute little cafe in Echo Park that serves coffee, breakfast items & pastries. You order from the window and can take food to go or enjoy sitting at one of the tables. The first time I went with a friend, we couldn’t help ourselves saying comments out loud while we were eating- like “mmmm”, “omg this is so good”. And it really is that good. Everything is DELICIOUS. I might make it one of my goals to try every single item on the menu and every single pastry on display. It’s tempting not to over order when you look at the menu because it all sounds good. You can never go wrong with avocado toast. The waffle with poached egg and bacon is a must have. The combination of sweet and savory is mouth watering. This breakfast pizza is also a must have. I mean, just look at that egg.

today’s breakfast: asparagus with fried egg

This is one of my favorite dishes to make because: 1) it’s easy, 2) it’s quick, 3) just look at it!ย  I really don’t know what else to say.ย  The directions are so simple and you end up with a fancy looking dish. ย Asparagus + egg + cheese= good start to the day! ๐Ÿ™‚ Recipe for Asparagus with fried egg courtesy of: http://www.bonappetit.com/recipe/asparagus-with-fried-eggs Drizzle steamed asparagus with olive oil. today’s breakfast: sweet potato hash

This was the first time I ever cooked with sweet potato or had it in a hash! I felt like mixing it up since I always use regular potatoes and found this recipe for sweet potato hash. There were a few revisions since I didn’t have some of the ingredients at home: I used yellow bell pepper, yellow onion & no green onions. And you can’t eat hash without some eggs! I of course had to add some fried eggs on top to complete the dish. A great, hearty breakfast to start the day! ๐Ÿ™‚ Recipe for Sweet Potato Hash courtesy of: http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/patrick-and-gina-neely/sweet-potato-hash-recipe.html Prep:10 min Cook:25 min Yield: 4 to 6 servings Ingredients: 2 large sweet potatoes, peeled and cubed into 1-inch cubes 6 tablespoons olive oil, divided 1/2 red onion, chopped 1 red bell pepper, chopped 1/4 cup green onions 2 cloves garlic, chopped 2 teaspoons smoked paprika Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley Directions: Add the potatoes to a large saucepan of salted boiling water and simmer …

my breakfast today: huevos rancheros

I think huevos rancheros is one of my favorite dishes to make. You can use so many different ingredients, whatever is to your liking. I like the usual corn tortilla, black beans, avocado, tomatoes, feta cheese, egg. This time, I tried pickling onions for the first time! It’s super easy to make and adds a little tang to the dish. It’s fun arranging all the ingredients. I felt like I was creating a work of art and it was quite peaceful. And then I devoured everything in minutes. ๐Ÿ™‚ Recipe for pickled onions courtesy of: http://sharedappetite.com/easy-pickled-onions/ Ingredients: 1 medium red onion, thinly sliced 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar 1 cup warm water 1 tablespoon sugar 1 1/2 teaspoons Kosher salt Directions: Combine vinegar, water, sugar, and salt in a medium bowl. Whisk together until sugar and salt is fully dissolved. Place onion in a jar or bowl (I like to use a mason jar). Pour vinegar mixture over the onions and let sit at room temperature for at least 1 hour if you’re in a …

easy-to-make French Toast

I grew up loving sweet breakfast dishes like pancakes, French toast, cinnamon rolls, but then as I got older, I began to only eat savory dishes. Once in a while though, I will have cravings and indulge in something sweet. I have been wanting French toast and was happy to see I had all the ingredients at home to make it. It’s so easy to make and doesn’t take that long. Just mix together your batter for the bread, dip the bread in, and fry in a pan with butter! It’s good to eat with just syrup but I added sliced strawberries and powdered sugar.. I was sad to see I ran out of sugar though and dusted the last bits I had left. There definitely needs to be more sugar! Maybe next time, I can ask my neighbor for a cup of powdered sugar? ๐Ÿ™‚ Recipe for French Toast courtesy of: http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/robert-irvine/french-toast-recipe.html Prep: 20 min / Cook: 10 min Yield:4 Ingredients: 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg 2 tablespoons sugar 4 tablespoons …

open faced egg & prosciutto sandwich

I was inspired to make this after seeing a post from a fellow foodie I follow on Instagram- @MissHappyBelly. Her posts always make me hungry and I want to eat and make everything she does! This particular post was for ciabatta with gruyere, arugula, prosciutto & fried egg. It’s so easy to make- just place a slice of bread at the bottom and assemble the rest of the ingredients on top: slices of prosciutto, gruyere or your desired cheese, arugula, and a fried egg. It’s a simple, fast & yummy breakfast meal! ๐Ÿ™‚

make this for breakfast: croque madame

One of my favorite entrees to order for breakfast is croque madame. What’s not to love about it? It’s an ooey gooey plate of deliciousness that includes ham, cheese & egg. A Cozy Kitchen has become one of my go-to sites now for great recipes. I have a long list of recipes waiting to be attempted.. the recipes are easy to follow & everything I have made so far has been satisfying. Including this recipe for croque madame! First, you make the yummy cheesy sauce, then spread it on sliced bread. Add mustard, ham, more sauce & cheese and then you cook the sandwiches in a pan. Finally, you add more sauce on top, stick in the oven and add a fried egg on top! It’s soooo good. It ain’t a healthy dish but it definitely is good. I might even add MORE sauce next time I make it. ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚ Recipe for Croque Madame courtesy of: http://acozykitchen.com/croque-madame/ Ingredients: 5 tablespoons unsalted butter 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour 2 cups whole milk 1/4 teaspoon salt …

mini pancakes with fruit toppings

Aren’t these adorable?? They’re mini pancakes with fruit toppings! It’s so easy to whip up. First you make the mini pancakes.. I was lazy so I just used pancake mix from a box. Then you slice fruit toppings- strawberries & bananas and add a few pieces on top of each mini pancake. Of course you can use whatever fruit you like– peaches, blueberries, raspberries would also be good and you can finish off with some whipped cream or syrup. These would be great to serve at a brunch party! They’re cute & yummy ๐Ÿ™‚

mmm avocado toast with toppings

Why is avocado toast so good?? It’s amazing to think that something so simple can be so delicious… and who even thought of it? Because that person is awesome to think of mashing avocado and spreading it on bread. The first time I had avocado toast was at one of my favorite restaurants in Los Angeles: The Eveleigh. And I remember it was sort of like love at first bite and I couldn’t believe I had never tried it before. It’s a great item to include with breakfast or to serve as an appetizer. You simply mash up an avocado in a bowl, add a good squeeze or two of lemon juice, salt & pepper. Then spread it on sliced, toasted bread. I sliced up a sourdough baguette and popped them in the oven. Then comes the fun part.. toppings! Obviously it would be good with just the avocado spread but you can also add some toppings for better taste and presentation. My four toppings: 1. sliced cherry tomatoes 2. thinly sliced radishes 3. a …
