weekend recap: apple picking + apple tarts

My friend Aileen & I decided to go on a little adventure and go apple picking. The nearest apple farms we could find were out in Oak Glen so we took a nice little drive to Willowbrook Apple Farm. It’s over an hour away from Los Angeles so it’s not close but we had lots to catch up on during the drive πŸ™‚ The farm was so cute. There were several trees we could pick apples from. There is no fee to enter- you just have to pick the bag size you want and pay a flat rate. They also have an apple cider making station and sell yummy caramel apples. It was such a lovely activity to do during the day. I was happy to come home with a bag of crisp, ripe apples and decided to make apple tarts. It is so easy to make if you already have frozen puff pastry. Just slice the apples and pour brown sugar & salt on top. Then place the slices on top of the puff …

pizza with fresh figs, ricotta, thyme & honey

I was bored last night and when I’m bored, I like to cook. I decided to try making this recipe I found for a pizza with figs.. never thought I would be eating figs on a pizza. This recipe is really simple. I just bought the pizza dough at Trader Joe’s (they have everything!). You lay out the dough and just place the sliced figs on top along with thyme, salt & pepper, and olive oil. Then before you serve it, drizzle some honey on top and you’re good to go! It’s a very interesting combo and I liked the juiciness from the figs. I’m going to add more figs next time. Oh and I also left some for my roommates to try but then they all fell on the ground… oops. So there will definitely be a next time πŸ™‚ Recipe for Pizza with fresh figs, ricotta, thyme & honey courtesy of: http://www.wholeliving.com/144913/pizza-fresh-figs-ricotta-thyme-and-honey Ingredients: Whole-Wheat Pizza Dough 1/4 cup fresh ricotta cheese Fresh thyme, chopped 3 sliced fresh figs Salt and pepper Olive oil …

homemade apple tarts

After making mushroom & gruyere tarts last week, I am now obsessed with making tarts. I never knew how easy it is and have been searching for a lot of different recipes. I have always wanted to make apple tarts and tried this recipe from The Pioneer Woman… like she said, it is quick & easy! You just mix apples with lemon juice, brown sugar & salt, arrange on the pastry sheet and bake! How easy is that?? I love the flakiness of the pastry & juiciness from the apples. It’s great for breakfast, dessert or a snack! Now, time to look for more tart recipes πŸ™‚ Recipe for quick & easy (and yummy) apple tarts courtesy of: http://thepioneerwoman.com/cooking/2009/05/quick-easy-and-yummy-apple-tart/ prep time: 20 min cook time: 20 min Ingredients: 1 whole Sheet Puffed Pastry, Cut Into Half Or Thirds 4 whole Apples, Cored, Halved, And Sliced, But Not Peeled 1 cup Brown Sugar 1/4 teaspoon Salt Instructions: Preheat oven to 415 degrees. my first time making donuts

I don’t know why but one day, I had a sudden urge to try making donuts. So I went out and bought a donut pan and all the ingredients and was so excited. I didn’t realize it would be so hard! So for my first try last night, I actually was too eager and didn’t read the directions ahead of time. I mixed all the ingredients together when I was supposed to mix the wet & dry ingredients separately. Fail. I kept going though and hoped it wouldn’t be too bad. After I took my first bite, it seemed like something was missing and it wasn’t sweet enough. I was sad they didn’t turn out great. Then I woke up this morning with new hope- this time, doing exactly as the directions said- I thought they turned out better than last night’s batch. I got mixed reviews though from friends though- some thought it needed to be lighter & more airy and the glaze was too thick. One person thought the glaze wasn’t sweet enough …
